Dating your Paintings & Materials
At Winsor & Newton we receive many hundreds of enquiries every year about dating materials. The most common ones are establishing a date for a painting, dating 19th century wooden boxes and dating more recent tubes to establish their suitability for current use.
From the landmark events below you can date boxes and tubes from the combination of Royal Appointments and Winsor & Newton details. Dating canvases is primarily from the stamps on the reverse of the canvases and we hope to have these documents on line very soon.
For the individual products, perhaps a glass water colour box from between the wars or a particular easel, our past catalogues are required - and these too we hope to have online soon.
And don't forget the changing graphics over the decades are always a big clue, Victorian, Edwardian, between the wars, 1950's, 1970's, recent etc. each period can fairly easily be recognised.
